Last time when I played some mission I was almost destroyed by the last kilrathi I fought and there was no base to land on. So I decided to wait until my jump drive was repaired and jumped out of the system.
But now I'm wondering if there is really any risk in jumping with a damaged jump drive? Does the damage have any effect at all?

It just makes the "charging" time of the jump take longer.

Will it ever get to the point where it is beyond repair or cannot jump at all?

It's possible, but the chances that your ship will survive that kind of beating are really small. Besides, when shields are depleted, the ship takes modular damage, which makes it a bit random.
After the jumpdrive is destroyed (grey in the list of components) you won't be able to repair it or jump.

Wasn't the possibility of the destroyed jump drive eliminated in later patches? I remember it being an issue because people didn't want to be trapped, so I thought CK just got rid of the possibility. It happened to me in the past a few times, but that was many builds ago.

This is what I remember also.
I'm not going into the whole "damaged-jumpdrive-makes-worm-hole-unstable-suggestion" since there are numerous posts on this in the development suggestions section.

Searching the announcements, I've found a thread that says:

That is the only reference to jump drive that I have found. Also, the maneuvering jets where the ones that couldn't be destroyed.

No offense intended.

I also thought I'd made the jump drive unable to be completely destroyed, but checking my code it seems it's only the maneuvering jets and thrusters. I'll add the jump drive to that list for the next release.

I've had multiple capship missions where I survived, but had no jump drive. Rage'd hard. I think it should stay though, it's another possibility, being marooned in your ship. That leads to other future possibilities too, like calling for a trade, but then boarding and stealing their ship! Mwahaha! I'm getting too far ahead though, I just think it adds an element of realism having a ship intact but totally useless. _________________ Nexus owner # whatever
